Poll on Expanded Gambling
| I am polling once again on my constituents' opinions about expanded gambling in the Commonwealth because I got relatively few responses to the poll in the last newsletter. The issue of expanded gambling in Massachusetts will come up soon in the House as legislators search for ways to create jobs and raise revenue. Two years ago, I voted against establishing casinos and the House voted the issue down. The state has had many cuts in critical programs that serve our most vulnerable residents. In light of our inadequate funds for services, as well as our high unemployment rate, it is appropriate to assess this option again - not necessarily to approve it. There are concerns on both sides of the issue, from the serious disease of gambling addiction to the roughly 6 million visits made by Massachusetts residents to Connecticut casinos each year, exporting Massachusetts revenue to Connecticut. I really hope you will respond to this poll - vote again even if you voted last time. If you would like to tell me your thoughts about the issue in detail, please click here; but first, vote for your preference by following this link.

Bills Moving Forward
| A bill I have filed several times has been reported out of the Education Committee favorably. House Bill 3436, An Act Enhancing Student Opportunity for Achievement and Results would set up a pilot program to implement and study the effects of small class sizes for K-3rd grades in targeted elementary schools. I am thankful for the Education Committee's support. In addition,
The bill to guarantee seven paid sick days per year for all employees to use for themselves or to care for their child, spouse, parent, or parent of spouse has been reported out favorably from the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development. A bill that I filed to define comparable work on whether the two positions entail comparable skill, effort, responsibility and working conditions between employees of the opposite sex has also been reported out favorably from the Labor and Workforce Development Committee.
